Equipment Operator I – Full-Time, Permanent
The Town of Watson Lake is seeking a dependable, safety-minded, and hardworking Equipment Operator I to join our Public Works team in a full-time, permanent role.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on work, operating heavy equipment, and contributing directly to the safe and efficient operation of essential municipal services. Working primarily at the Watson Lake Landfill, the Equipment Operator I plays an important role in landfill maintenance, residential waste collection, and ensuring equipment is kept clean, secure, and in good working condition.
About the Role:
Reporting within the Public Works Department, the Equipment Operator I is responsible for supporting landfill and waste collection operations, including:
- Operating heavy equipment such as front-end loaders, excavators, skid steers, and other equipment for snow removal, covering solid waste at the landfill, and roadway maintenance
- Operating a single-axle garbage truck on scheduled residential collection routes within municipal boundaries
- Performing daily safety and maintenance checks on equipment
- Completing cleaning and basic maintenance on equipment
- Overseeing the activities of landfill public use areas during hours of operation
- Providing information to the public regarding proper procedures at the Solid Waste Facility, solid waste regulations, and Town of Watson Lake bylaws
- Inspecting loads brought to the landfill to ensure compliance with solid waste regulations and bylaws
- Monitoring and maintaining the Solid Waste Facility for cleanliness and safety, including maintaining and repairing areas of the facility as needed
- Undertaking professional development, as required
What You Bring:
Qualifications and experience include:
- Valid Class 3 Driver’s Licence
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience operating heavy equipment such as single axle trucks, front-end loaders, excavators, skid steers, or similar equipment
- Experience with general maintenance of equipment and pre- and post-trip inspections
- Knowledge of garbage truck operations is considered an asset
- Familiarity with Yukon solid waste disposal regulations and the Town of Watson Lake Solid Waste Bylaw
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
- Strong communication skills
- Standard First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain
- WHMIS certification, or willingness to obtain
- Transportation of Dangerous Goods certification, or willingness to obtain
Additional Information:
This is a full-time, permanent position with 40 hours per week. The pay range is $30.30 to $33.10 per hour, depending on experience. The successful candidate must provide copies of all required certifications and licences prior to their start date.
The incumbent is expected to wear protective footwear and hearing protection. This position involves working with a wide variety of customers and handling heavy, often dirty materials in a noisy environment. Some duties involve outdoor work and may occur in poor weather conditions.
