Mt. Maichen Ski Hill

Located just off the Robert Campbell Highway, Mt. Maichen Ski Hill is a small, community-based ski area serving Watson Lake and visitors to the southeast Yukon. The hill has gained attention in recent years for its high user ratings and continued operation despite the challenges faced by many small ski areas across Canada.
Mt. Maichen has an elevation of approximately 500 feet and features nine groomed alpine runs serviced by two T-bar lifts. The longest run is just under a mile, offering a sustained descent without the congestion typical of larger resorts. The terrain accommodates a range of abilities, from beginners to more experienced skiers and snowboarders.
The ski hill chalet includes equipment rentals, a concession, and a licensed lounge. During the non-ski season, the chalet is operated by the Town of Watson Lake and is used for private events such as weddings and community functions. During the winter operating season, the facility is managed by the Watson Lake Ski Club.
The Watson Lake Ski Club is a volunteer-run organization responsible for day-to-day ski hill operations during the winter. Its members handle lift operations, grooming, instruction, and events. The club’s volunteer base is a key reason the hill continues to function reliably in a remote northern community, where staffing and operating costs can otherwise be prohibitive.
Beyond alpine skiing, Mt. Maichen connects directly to cross-country ski and hiking trails, which are used year-round for recreation, wildlife viewing, and photography. The location offers views over Watson Lake and the surrounding landscape.
The ski season typically begins in December, weather permitting, and often extends into April.
In 2025, the Watson Lake Ski Club received a grant from Yukon Lotteries that supported the rebuilding of the T-bar lift at Mt. Maichen.
"Our ski facility, Mt. Maichen, continues to operate thanks to the financial support of Yukon Lotteries. Their ongoing investment plays a vital role in maintaining and improving this important community recreation asset. We extend our sincere gratitude for their continued commitment to our community."
