What is HAF?
The Housing Accelerator Fund, or HAF is a new program from the Government of Canada’s Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation, which provides funding directly to municipal governments to help build more housing. Watson Lake applied for, and was awarded over $2 million dollars to address housing supply issues in our community. In order to receive this funding, the Town of Watson Lake needs to meet the conditions of the HAF agreement and complete the initiatives proposed in our application.
Which programs can I apply for?
Residents will be able to access funding through the grant programs to build infill units and the residential conversion initiative. Businesses and private contractors will have new opportunities to do business with the Town of Watson Lake as the service manual for municipal and private sector collaboration on municipal services is created. All residents will have improved access to lending as the Action Plan to address these barriers is implemented.
How can I have my say regarding HAF initiatives?
Other than applying directly to HAF funded projects and grants, residents are encouraged to take part in HAF-initatives by providing input at municipal council meetings and Town Hall events. Please watch our website and Facebook page for updates on topics and timelines.
How does the Town of Watson Lake ensure we are awarded all of the funding that was applied for through the Housing Accelerator Fund?
In order to receive this funding, the Town of Watson Lake needs to meet the conditions of HAF agreement. The Town of Watson Lake must implement the initiatives identified in the Action Plan within three years of the start of the HAF program. Funds are provided at 4 major milestones:
1. At the beginning of the program (25%)
2. Year Two Progress Report (25%)
3. Year Three Progress Report (25%)
4. When Watson Lake achieves the housing targets of 42 units created (25%)
Will these initiatives create affordable housing?
Affordable housing falls under the territorial government's jurisdiction. The hope is that the five HAF initiatives will increase housing supply. This will help reduce the pressure that contributes to high housing costs.
